DUNDONALD ICE BOWL MOVES A STEP CLOSER AS PLANNING PERMISSION IS APPROVED

4th May 2021

Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council recently approved planning permission to redevelop Dundonald International Ice Bowl with plans that will see it transformed in to a top class attraction with state of the art facilities in a sleek, modern fit for purpose building.

We are providing quantity surveying services on this project as part of the AECOM design team.

Councillor Stuart Hughes, Chairman of the Capital Projects Committee said:

I am delighted to see this project pass a key milestone. The innovative plans include a new Olympic sized ice rink, the only public one on the island of Ireland putting Lisburn and Castlereagh on the map in the professional skating world.

“Along with tenpin bowling and a children’s soft play & adventure play area, we will attract visitors from across NI and beyond, ensuring we retain our status as one of NI’s leading visitor attractions.

“The local community will also benefit from new primary health care and community facilities including an outdoor children’s play area. There will be restaurants, offices and new car parking, all surrounded by contemporary landscaping. I am excited to see how this develops.”

Alderman Michael Henderson MBE, Chairman of the Leisure & Community Development Committee added:

“The success of Dundonald International Ice Bowl speaks for itself, welcoming over 600,000 people through its doors each year. Its importance as a regional attraction is evident, supporting tourism, economic activity, job creation and now providing services to the community under these new plans.

“The new Dundonald International Ice Bowl will bring so many benefits to the area and the surrounding businesses. Plans will be phased so that visitors can continue to enjoy the Ice Bowl and all that it offers during development and so that jobs can be sustained throughout the process.

“I welcome the approval of planning for this project and am excited to see the plans progress.”

ESC'S WEALTH OF EXPERTISE AND EXPERIENCE MAKES TENDERING FOR NEW WORK EASIER

8th March 2021

Commercial Director Claire Mullan started with esc 8 years ago as a Bid Writer and has progressed through the company to her current role. Claire’s bid successes include the Waterfront Convention Centre, Hillsborough Castle & Gardens Visitor Facilities, Canterbury Christ Church University STEM Building, Basildon University Hospital & Broomfield Hospital, South West College Erne Campus and Queens Quay Redevelopment.

Tendering for new projects is maybe one of the most satisfying jobs in the world because you work extremely hard completing the tender and within a relatively short time frame you find out if all the hard work has paid off. esc’s wealth of experience across diverse sectors and the great team who constantly deliver makes the bid writing process easier.”

As Commercial Director, Claire’s also involved in the general running of the business, making new contacts and developing relationships with partner organisations.

At esc I have the opportunity to work on some of the most iconic projects in N.Ireland and the UK whilst also working with an extremely down to earth bunch of people. Everyone supports each other 100%; it really is a lovely place to work - every day is challenging, different and fun!

As a woman in construction Claire is always inspired by other women breaking ground in the industry.

Recently my colleague Anna McMullan told me she was chairing a meeting as Project Manager and when she looked around the room every design team member and client representative at the table was a woman – that was pretty inspiring!

When Claire’s not working she loves to be outside – whether that’s working in the garden or swimming in the sea.

I also used to sing in a choir but now that I have a little 1 year old boy the only performances are of Disney musical numbers!

AS PROJECT MANAGER ANNA IS WORKING ON A PROJECT AT METHODIST COLLEGE, BELFAST - HER OLD SCHOOL!

2nd March 2021

Anna McMullan, Project Manager, joined esc in December 2017 after qualifying with a Master’s in Construction Business & Project Management. “I joined as a Junior Project Manager with lots to learn and, through both a breadth of projects and guidance from my fellow colleagues, I have certainly done that.”

Anna continues to act in an assistant Project Management role, working with senior team members to deliver exciting and challenging projects such as the representation of Hillsborough Castle & Gardens and Methodist College, Belfast - her old school!

More recently, esc has given Anna the opportunity to lead her own projects. “I am currently working on the design and delivery of a new Library facility in Enniskillen and a Shared Space/Creative Hub which will be part of an extension and refurbishment of Bushmills Courthouse. The Bushmills Courthouse project is particularly exciting for me as I have an interest in historical architecture and to be afforded the opportunity to work on a project which will restore a building initially built in 1863 is great!”

At esc Anna is afforded opportunities to learn, develop and progress in her career. “As a Project Manager I am involved from the initial Client meetings to project completion; it is very rewarding seeing designs become buildings.

Anna loves this Greek proverb: ‘A society grows great when we plant trees in whose shade we will never sit’. "This may seem a little philosophical,” says Anna, “but I think working in the construction industry gives us an opportunity to make this a reality."

DELIVERING AN IMPROVEMENT TO THE CURRENT EDUCATIONAL SECTOR STOCK

19th February 2021

Geoff Patterson joined esc in early 2018 in the role of a Project Manager having started out - in the last quarter of the last century (his own words!) - as a Quantity Surveyor.

Geoff has spent his working life in the construction industry in both the professional and construction sectors which included 20 years as a business owner operator. He has been involved in a variety of different projects and at esc his projects are based on delivering an improvement to the current educational sector stock.

Geoff says “The best thing about being a Project Manager is balancing the good results with the not so good results and still hearing someone say thank you.”

On the team at esc he says “They are a good group of people to work with.”

When he’s not working, Geoff takes to the hills and mountains, lately the Caminos of Spain and, until COVID-19, Portugal.

THERE ARE RARELY TWO DAYS THE SAME AND ALWAYS SOMETHING NEW TO BE LEARNT

16th February 2021

Quantity Surveyor Andrew Kerr joined esc in 2017 when he finished his degree at Ulster University.

Over the past 3 years I’ve gained a lot of experience and knowledge from my colleagues and I’m now working on a wide variety of projects providing full pre and post contract Quantity Surveying services to our clients.

Currently Andrew’s working on the new South West College Erne Campus and the Enniskillen Workhouse - both on the same site, Holy Trinity College in Cookstown and Newry Theatre & Civic Hub to name a few.

"Variety is the thing I enjoy most about my job. There are rarely two days the same and always something new to be learnt," says Andrew.

Andrew’s a keen follower of Formula 1 among other motor racing series and when not working he loves anything with an engine! “I have a Japanese Import Toyota MR2 turbo and am helping my father restore a Citroen 2CV.”

IN HER 37 YEARS WITH THE COMPANY 'MM' HAS SEEN THE COMPANY GO FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH

12th February 2021

Margaret-Mary Friel, or ‘MM’ as she’s better known, has accumulated a grand total of 37 years within the company, firstly Dalzell & Campbell, Tom Clarke & Co, then Clarke Shipway to Edmond Shipway and now esc.  As a result, MM has friends all over the world as anyone who has worked with esc has stayed in touch with her.

In my 37 years with the company I’ve seen some changes, going from just 3 in the office to a team of 14. We have gone from strength to strength, and to see people grow within the company makes me proud.

MM’s most loved project over the years is the Restoration of Belfast Castle. “Denis Haslam, who was the Architect, was such a lovely man and a font of all knowledge. He left his impression on me.”  MM is office based and wouldn’t normally be on site. However, she got to visit the IFA National Stadium: “I got a private viewing of that, and whilst I’m not the best football fan in the world, I was very impressed with the stadium especially the Education & Heritage Centre.”

When MM’s not working she loves to dust down her old 45’s and LP’s and play them on her very old record player.

"IT’S NEVER TOO EARLY TO START LOOKING FOR A STUDENT PLACEMENT”

8th December 2020

Student Quantity Surveyor Aaron Carson shares his advice on what to consider:

  1. Start as soon as possible. It’s never too early

  2. Follow companies on social media. If they are recruiting they’ll normally post on social media or their website

  3. Decide which career route you’d like to take - private quantity surveying practice like esc or contractor

  4. Research the companies you’re considering; do you like the work they do? Do they work outside NI - therefore will you have to travel?

  5. Prepare your CV well before you send it. How could your CV could stand out from the rest?  Being self-motivated is a key skill esc looks out for. You’ll need to demonstrate your key skills.

Andrew’s mentor Gavin Morgan said “A few years back we were contacted by an Upper Sixth Pupil who knew he wanted to do quantity surveying and wanted some practical experience during the summer before starting his further education. This young student demonstrated to us that he was certainly self-motivated and determined to stay ahead of his peers. He worked with us for two months.

At esc we are always happy to hear from placement students. Feel free to speak with Claire Mullan or Gavin Morgan 028 9077 9392 or send your CV to belfast@escconsult.co.uk telling us why you’d like to work with esc.
