"IT’S NEVER TOO EARLY TO START LOOKING FOR A STUDENT PLACEMENT”

8th December 2020

Student Quantity Surveyor Aaron Carson shares his advice on what to consider:

  1. Start as soon as possible. It’s never too early

  2. Follow companies on social media. If they are recruiting they’ll normally post on social media or their website

  3. Decide which career route you’d like to take - private quantity surveying practice like esc or contractor

  4. Research the companies you’re considering; do you like the work they do? Do they work outside NI - therefore will you have to travel?

  5. Prepare your CV well before you send it. How could your CV could stand out from the rest?  Being self-motivated is a key skill esc looks out for. You’ll need to demonstrate your key skills.

Andrew’s mentor Gavin Morgan said “A few years back we were contacted by an Upper Sixth Pupil who knew he wanted to do quantity surveying and wanted some practical experience during the summer before starting his further education. This young student demonstrated to us that he was certainly self-motivated and determined to stay ahead of his peers. He worked with us for two months.

At esc we are always happy to hear from placement students. Feel free to speak with Claire Mullan or Gavin Morgan 028 9077 9392 or send your CV to belfast@escconsult.co.uk telling us why you’d like to work with esc.

LANDSCAPE INSTITUTE EXCELLENCE IN HERITAGE AND CULTURE AWARD FOR HILLSBOROUGH CASTLE

26th November 2020

Congratulations to The Paul Hogarth Company for scooping this year's Landscape Institute Excellence in Heritage and Culture Award with their work on Hillsborough Castle.

The Landscape Institute said: The In 2014 Historic Royal Palaces took over the operation of Hillsborough Castle and Gardens and embarked on a major restoration project. The aim of the project was to open what was once described as a 'locked away hidden gem'. Through ambitious planning, £20 million of investment, two years of design and two further years of sensitive construction, the doors were flung open to all in April 2019; reintroducing a rich and vibrant historic landscape, giving the Castle and Gardens a future as valuable as its past.

A unanimous winner which all judges described as a 'beautiful and transformational scheme for a site of very significant heritage value'.

Aaron Carson is an Ulster University BSc (Hons) Quantity Surveying and Commercial Management student working with esc. Aaron started in the construction industry as a plumber and did a foundation degree at South West College to help him decide on his career path.
